Acupuncture has a long history and it originated from China 5000 years ago with 2000–year literature history. In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, all disorders are shown at certain acupuncture points, which are either on the skin surface or just below it, and the total 361 classical acupuncture points are linked together by meridians. In the meridians, vital energy (Qi) circulates throughout the body in a right and balance order. The meridians have either Yin or Yang characteristics and belong to 5 Zhang-Viscera or 6 Fu-viscera. When the pathogenic evils attack the body from either exterior or interior, the right order of Qi and blood circulation in the meridians will be affected. This results imbalance of the Yin and Yang of the body or the meridians are blocked. Then unhealthy body conditions come up.
'Su Wen –Ju Tong Lun (Chapter about pain syndrome) 'said 'Qi and blood circulate inside the circle of the meridians without slowing down or stopping. But when the cold evil attacks the meridians, the Qi and blood circulation is not smooth any more. The cold evil stays outside the meridian results less blood circulating; the cold evil stays inside the meridians results Qi stagnation, thus the body suffers sudden pain' (Huandi Neijing).'' Dr Li Dongyuan (AD 1180—1251) in Yuan Dynasty said; 'Where the meridian is smooth enough, there is no pain: Where the meridian is blocked, there is a pain' in his book ''Yixue Faming (Medicine Discovers)''.
That is why the ancient Chinese people treat low back pain using acupuncture to unblock the meridians. Traditional Chinese acupuncture is to insert needles into the acupuncture points in order to unblock the meridians, and make the Qi and blood circulate in a smooth and right order to get rid of the ill conditions of the body. It is quite similar as when there is a traffic jam on the road, we need to solve the problem, unblock the ways, in order that the road is smooth enough for all the vehicles (Qi and blood) to go smoothly and fast.
